Tim Lovell scored a goal and added a pair of assists to lead Arizona State to a weekend sweep of Colorado College with a 6-1 victory Saturday at Mullett Arena.
Â
Robert Mastrosimone and Charlie Schoen each added a goal and a helper and TJ Semptimphelter finished with 24 saves as the Sun Devils evened their record at 4-4.
Â
Things looked promising right off the bat for the Tigers, who were awarded a power play just 27 seconds into the contest following a slashing call to TY Murchison, but penalties to
Ryan Beck and
Danny Weight gave the Sun Devils a man advantage minutes later. After Murchison came out of the box, Ty Jackson opened the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal at the 2:42 mark. He took a pass in front of the net from Lovell and beat CC goalie
Kaidan Mbereko.
Â
Arizona State doubled the lead at 9:30 of the opening frame when Ryan O'Reilly pounced on a rebound after Mbereko stopped a shot by Schoen and found the back of the net.
Â
ASU's Dylan Jackson was whistled for a 5-minute slashing major and game misconduct with four seconds remaining in the first, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize. CC had another power play less than a minute later and again came away empty.
Â
The Sun Devils doubled their lead in the middle frame with goals from Teddy Lagerback and Jackson. Lagerback was stopped by Mbereko on clean breakaway, but put the puck in the net following a couple shots in front of Mbereko at the 7:56 mark. Jackson then made it 4-0 after taking a pass from Lovell and had an open net.
Â
Schoen scored for a 5-0 lead at 2:12 of the third period after a CC turnover in its own zone, then
Noah Prokop put the Tigers on the board with his first goal of the season just 14 seconds later. Prokop deflected
Jack Millar's shot from the right point just enough to get past Semptimphelter.
Â
Lovell closed out the scoring with a power-play goal at 17:18 of the final period.
Â
"They wanted it more tonight," head coach
Kris Mayotte said. "They put us on our heels, had more jump and were more committed. We've got to get to work and make the work matter."
Â
The Tigers (2-4) struggled on the power play for the second straight night, going 0-for-5 after a 1-for-5 performance on Friday. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils capitalized on two of their three man-advantage opportunities. Mbereko made 23 saves as the Sun Devils outshot Colorado College, 29-25.
Â
The Tigers battle cross-town rival Air Force in a home-and-home series next weekend for the Pikes Peak Trophy. The series starts on Friday, Oct. 28 at Ed Robson Arena, starting at 7:30 p.m.
