In a game that saw a crazy bounce on each of the first two goals, fourth-ranked St. Cloud State defeated Colorado College, 3-1, Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Â
With the victory, the Huskies improved to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the NCHC, while the Tigers fell to 5-7-1 and 2-2-1.
Â
After a scoreless first period, SCSU took a 1-0 lead on the craziest bounce of the night. While killing a penalty, Brendan Bushy flipped the puck into the air from deep in his own zone. The puck landed just in front of CC goalie Kaiden Mbereko, took a bounce to his left and found its way into the net at the 17:44 mark of the second period.
Â
The Tigers received some luck of their own to even the score at 5:31 of the third period. Noah Laba collected the puck along the left boards, cut through the middle and his centering pass deflected off the stick of Husky defender Ryan Rosborough and through the legs of goalie Jaxon Castor.
Â
Dylan Anhorn notched the game-winning goal with just 3:32 remaining in the final frame. Mbereko stopped Micah Miller's point-blank shot, but the puck squeezed through a scrum in front of the net to Anhorn, who placed a wrister from the left circle just inside the left post.
Â
Mbererko headed to the bench following a time out with 2:16 to play, and Zach Okabe closed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left in the third.
Â
"It was a bend, don't break thing on both sides," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "Some of the best chances never quite got there and you had guys at their end diving for pucks and guys on our end doing the same. I thought it was a good, hard, tight NCHC hockey game."
Â
Each team had 29 shots on goal and was 0-for-2 on the power play. Castor finished with 28 saves, including a stop on a point-blank shot by CC's
Brett Chorske midway through the second period that kept the game scoreless.
Â
Mbereko, meanwhile, had 26 saves and has allowed just six goals in his last five games.
Â
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, Nov. 19, beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
