Mbereko, McKown Lead Tigers to Shutout At UMD

Hunter McKown scored twice and Kaidan Mbereko made a career-high 39 saves to lead Colorado College past Minnesota Duluth, 3-0, Friday night at Amsoil Arena.

Mbereko posted his second shutout over the Bulldogs in less than a month after collecting a 5-0 win in Colorado Springs on Nov. 4. With Friday's victory, the Tigers improved to 6-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NCHC.

Following a scoreless first period in which Mbereko made 16 saves, CC's Cade Ahrenholz was whistled for a 5-minute major penalty for checking from behind just 1:27 into the frame. Less than a minute into the penalty, Patrick Cozzi gathered the puck at the red line along the left boards, cut in past a UMD defender and beat Bulldog goalie Matthew Thiessen (28 saves) top shelf for his first career shorthanded goal and a 1-0 lead. Cozzi also drew a penalty prior to the goal as he sped down the left side, so the teams played 4-on-4 for the ensuing two minutes.

The Tigers killed off Ahrenholz's penalty and Mbereko continued his brilliant play in the middle period with another 16 stops.

McKown doubled the lead with his team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 16:27 mark. Matthew Gleason sped down the left side and centered the puck from behind the net that deflected off Stanley Cooley into the slot, where McKown had an open net past Thiessen to make it 2-0.

The Tigers' defense clamped down on UMD in the third period, limiting the home team to just seven shots in the final 20 minutes. McKown notched his second of the game and CC's first empty-net goal of the season with three seconds left in the contest.

The Bulldogs outshot Colorado College, 39-31, with McKown and Nicklas Andrews leading the way with a team-high six shots, tying a career high for Andrews.

Each team was 0-for-5 on the power play, with Minnesota Duluth firing 16 shots on its five man-advantage opportunities.

The teams will battle again on Saturday, Dec. 3, beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
