Sam Hentges scored a pair of power-play goals and added an assist to lead 11
th-ranked St. Cloud State past Colorado College, 4-1, Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Â
The Huskies scored on three of their six power-play opportunities and David Hrenak made 21 saves as SCSU halted the Tigers' two-game winning streak.
Â
Logan Will scored and
Matt Vernon had 28 saves for the Tigers, who couldn't stay out of the penalty box then had trouble handling the home team's man advantage unit.
Â
Following a tripping call to
Stanley Cooley, the Huskies got on the board first with a power-play goal at 8:34 of the opening frame. Spencer Meier slid down the left side, took a pass from Kevin Fitzgerald across the crease and put the puck in the open net.
Â
Easton Brodzinski doubled SCSU's lead with 3:31 left in the first period. Hentges' shot from the high slot was blocked before getting Vernon. Brodzinski collected the puck in front of the crease and put it home for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Hentges made it 3-0 with a power-play goal just 3:27 into the second period. He collected the puck at center ice, slid past the blue line and placed a backhander past Vernon from the slot.
Â
The Tigers (9-19-3, 6-14-1 NCHC) had a 5-on-3 opportunity for 59 seconds midway through the period, but the Huskies killed off the first penalty. CC capitalized during the 5-on-4 as Will cut the deficit to 3-1 with a power-play goal of his own. He took a pass from
Jordan Biro and place a wrist shot from the left dot over Hrenak's right shoulder for his sixth goal of the season.
Hunter McKown also assisted on the play and now has a point in five of his last nine games.
Â
Hentges put the Huskies (16-11-4, 8-9-4 NCHC) back up by three with another power-play goal, this time beating Vernon with a wrister from the left circle with 1:13 left in the middle frame. Veeti Miettenen and Nick Perbix assisted on each of Hentges' tallies.
Â
"When they make the power play look as easy as they did, it can be deflating," head coach
Kris Mayotte said. "We are here to win games, and it's tough to do that when you give up three power-play goals.
Â
"I thought we took steps in the third period and we got better as the game went on in the defensive zone. We also were very strong on faceoffs tonight and that helped our PK's that were successful."
Â
The teams will battle again on Saturday, Feb. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
