Fifth-ranked Western Michigan scored five power-play goals en route to an 8-2 victory over Colorado College Friday night at Robson Arena.
Â
Ronnie Attard had a hat trick and added an assist and Aidan Fulp collected four assists for WMU, who outshot the Tigers, 50-21. Max Sasson chipped in with two goals and two helpers and Brandon Bussi finished with 19 saves.
Â
The Broncos (18-6-0, 10-5-0 NCHC) took control from the opening faceoff. They had the first 10 shots on goal of the game and took a 1-0 lead just 2:15 into the contest. A CC pass in its own zone deflected off a stick laying on the ice right to Ethen Frank, who found Attard wide open in front of the net and he beat CC goalie
Matt Vernon.
Â
Sasson doubled the lead with a power-play goal at the 5:11 mark. He took a pass from Fulp and slid down the left side, then cut in front and his shot was initially saved by Vernon, but the puck slid inside the near post.
Â
Hugh Larkin made it 3-0 with a power-play goal of his own at the 18:17 mark. He took a pass from Luke Grainger from behind the net and put a shot past Vernon from the slot.
Â
Sasson and Attard each scored his second of the game in the middle frame, with Attard's coming on the power play at the 10:17 mark that chased Vernon from the game.
Dominic Basse took over and stopped seven shots the remainder of the period. Vernon closed the game with 24 saves.
Â
While Western Michigan couldn't miss on the power play (5-for-7 with 18 shots), the Tigers had a 5-on-3 early in the third period, but could not get a shot on goal. CC (7-15-3, 4-10-1 NCHC) was 0-for-4 with a man advantage and mustered just four shots.
Â
Attard completed his hat trick with another PPG midway through the final period, while Ty Glover and Jason Polin finished the scoring for the Broncos.
Â
Jackson Jutting scored his third goal of the season at the 12:34 mark of the third to cut the lead to 6-1, and
Patrick Cozzi notched his second of the year, a 4-on-4 goal with 4.5 seconds remaining.
Â
The two teams battle again Saturday night, beginning at 6 p.m.
