Special Teams Doom Tigers in 8-2 Loss to #5 Western Michigan

Fifth-ranked Western Michigan scored five power-play goals en route to an 8-2 victory over Colorado College Friday night at Robson Arena.

Ronnie Attard had a hat trick and added an assist and Aidan Fulp collected four assists for WMU, who outshot the Tigers, 50-21. Max Sasson chipped in with two goals and two helpers and Brandon Bussi finished with 19 saves.

The Broncos (18-6-0, 10-5-0 NCHC) took control from the opening faceoff. They had the first 10 shots on goal of the game and took a 1-0 lead just 2:15 into the contest. A CC pass in its own zone deflected off a stick laying on the ice right to Ethen Frank, who found Attard wide open in front of the net and he beat CC goalie Matt Vernon.

Sasson doubled the lead with a power-play goal at the 5:11 mark. He took a pass from Fulp and slid down the left side, then cut in front and his shot was initially saved by Vernon, but the puck slid inside the near post.

Hugh Larkin made it 3-0 with a power-play goal of his own at the 18:17 mark. He took a pass from Luke Grainger from behind the net and put a shot past Vernon from the slot.

Sasson and Attard each scored his second of the game in the middle frame, with Attard's coming on the power play at the 10:17 mark that chased Vernon from the game. Dominic Basse took over and stopped seven shots the remainder of the period. Vernon closed the game with 24 saves.

While Western Michigan couldn't miss on the power play (5-for-7 with 18 shots), the Tigers had a 5-on-3 early in the third period, but could not get a shot on goal. CC (7-15-3, 4-10-1 NCHC) was 0-for-4 with a man advantage and mustered just four shots.

Attard completed his hat trick with another PPG midway through the final period, while Ty Glover and Jason Polin finished the scoring for the Broncos.

Jackson Jutting scored his third goal of the season at the 12:34 mark of the third to cut the lead to 6-1, and Patrick Cozzi notched his second of the year, a 4-on-4 goal with 4.5 seconds remaining.

The two teams battle again Saturday night, beginning at 6 p.m.
