Tigers Rally Then Win Shootout at No. 16 Omaha

Kaidan Mbereko tied his career high with 40 saves and Noah Laba sent the game to overtime with 17 seconds remaining in regulation as Colorado College and No. 16 Omaha battled to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

The Tigers gained the extra point in the NCHC standings after freshmen Ryan Beck and Noah Serdachny scored in the shootout and Mbereko saved both shots he faced. CC won the season series against the nationally-ranked Mavericks (2-1-1), taking nine of a possible 12 points and moving into a fifth-place tie with Minnesota Duluth.

Not counting the two saves in the shootout, Mbereko was outstanding once again, equaling his career high with 40 saves in regulation and overtime.

Omaha's Ty Mueller put the Mavericks on the board first for the second consecutive night at the 4:54 mark of the second period. After Griffin Ludtke had his shot blocked by teammate Jack Randl, Mueller picked up the rebound and sent a shot past Mbereko from the top of the right circle.

Beck evened things up with a clean breakaway goal at the 13:20 mark of the middle frame. Jack Millar sent a clearing pass from his own goal line that eluded a pair of Omaha players and went right to Beck, who deked Omaha goalie Simon Latkoczy before beating him with a backhander for his second goal of the season.

The Mavericks regained the lead during a 5-on-3 advantage at 16:25 of the second. Randl took a pass from Tyler Weiss and scored from the right circle.

It looked as though the home team took a two-goal lead as the puck entered the net past Mbereko as the second period horn sounded, but after video review, the officials determined the puck crossed the line after the period ended.

Mbereko kept it a one-score game with a save on a breakaway by Omaha's Michael Abgrall midway through the third period. The Mavericks also thought they scored with seven minutes left on the power play, but after video review, the officials determined the play was offside.

Laba evened it up with his second goal of the weekend as the Tigers had an extra skater on the ice. During a scrum in front of the Omaha net, Laba flipped the puck over Latkoczy with 16.8 seconds left. Omaha challenged the play being offside, but the play held up. Since the home team had taken their timeout, the Tigers opened the overtime period with a power play.

Neither team scored in the extra frame, setting up the shootout and scores by Beck and Serdachny. The Tigers are now 2-0 in shootouts this season, also winning at Miami thanks to a Beck goal.

The Tigers continue on the road next weekend with a series at Western Michigan, Feb. 17-18, in Kalamazoo, Mich.
