Laba Wins it in Overtime for 17th-Ranked Tigers

Noah Laba scored 1:39 into overtime to lift No. 17/18 Colorado College to a 3-2 victory over Minnesota Duluth Saturday at Amsoil Arena.

Laba collected the puck in the CC end, skated up the ice and placed a wrister from the top of the right circle past UMD goaltender Zach Stajskal for his fourth game-winning goal of the season. The Tigers improved to 11-8-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the NCHC and sit in fifth place in the league standings after their fourth consecutive 3-2 overtime result in league contests.

Tiger goalie Kaidan Mbereko was excellent Saturday night with 34 saves, including 17 in the third period. He made five saves during a penalty kill with seven minutes remaining in the third period.

Carter Loney put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 with just 10.7 seconds left in the first period. During a 2-on-1 rush with his team shorthanded, Loney put a wrist shot from the left circle just inside the near post.

Tyler Coffey evened the score with his fourth goal of the season just 2:02 into the second period with a rocket from the top of the slot that cleanly beat Stejskal. Stanley Cooley posted his third point of the weekend with the only assist on the play.

The 1-1 draw lasted just 34 seconds before Kyle Bettens regained the lead for the home team at 2:36 of the middle frame.

It looked like the Bulldogs were going to head into the second intermission with the lead, but Nicklas Andrews took a pass from Laba and scored from the top of the left circle with .2 of a second remaining on the clock for his third goal of the season. Gleb Veremyev also collected a helper on the play.

Neither team found the net in the third period, setting up Laba's heroics.

Minnesota Duluth (7-10-4, 3-6-1 NCHC) outshot the Tigers, 36-32. Coffey led the Tigers with five, while Ben Steeves collected a game-high nine.

For the second night in a row, neither team converted on the power play and Stejskal finished with 29 saves.

The Tigers return home to face Miami University next weekend, Jan. 19-20, at Ed Robson Arena. Friday's game begins at 7 pm. (MT) and will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
