On a frigid, snowy late October night at Weidner Field, the Colorado College women's soccer team was anything but brittle in a 2-1 win over the Air Force Academy in the City For Champions Cup.
The Tigers overcame the elements and a motivated Falcons team to hoist the City For Champions Cup trophy for the first time in the series history.
Kendall Memoly and
Finley Schoenbeck scored in each half to elevate CC over Air Force and keep its season alive.
"Air Force did a really good job in the second half handling the elements better than we did, but we got that second goal; Regan [Wallace] made some big saves at the end for us, and I'm just really excited for the team," head coach
Keri Sanchez said.
Memoly broke open the scoring in the 21st minute after
Brett Tsamasfyros crossed a beautiful ball to No. 7, who was in the box to put it in the back of the net. It was Memoly's fifth goal and Tsamasfyros' second assist of the year.
35 minutes later, in the second half, Memoly found Schoenbeck in the box, and the freshman moved to the keeper's right side. The freshman somehow found a gap in the left side of the net after fighting off multiple Falcon defenders.
Memoly finished with three shots (two on goal) and three points. Schoenbeck also finished with a team-high three shots (one on target).
CC outshot Air Force 18-12 (8-7 SOG), including 11-4 in the first half.
Four players played all 90 minutes: goalkeeper
Regan Wallace and seniors
Kaelin Enga,
Alexis Wessler, and
Emily Hitt. Freshman
Charlotte Strabel played a career-high 64 minutes off the bench and helped anchor the Tigers' defense in the second half.
Air Force cut the lead in half in the 74th minute when Annika Jost snuck a ball past Wallace. The Falcons would get five more shots in the final nine minutes, but the CC defense was steadfast and kept its advantage to secure the 2-1 victory.
"Grit is one of our words for the year, and it is one of the things we probably improved most this season," Sanchez said. "It came tonight with handling the elements. We started off with rain, got some snow, and some crazy stuff was happening. We did the right things to ensure we came out on the right side of the game tonight."
Wallace finished the game with six saves, and the Tigers' defense flexed its muscle and surrendered only one goal in the final three games of the regular season.
CC improved to 8-9-3 (4-5-2) and improved its chance to advance to the Mountain West Tournament, slated to start on Nov. 3 in San Diego, Calif. The Tigers will earn the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament with a Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming tie/loss on Thursday night in their respective matches. If Wyoming defeats Colorado State, CC could still earn the final spot with a Nevada and New Mexico tie or loss.
