No. 8 Tigers Retain Pikes Peak Trophy With OT Win Over Air Force

Max Burkholder scored 1:08 into overtime to give No. 8 Colorado College a 3-2 victory over Air Force Friday night at Ed Robson Arena, allowing the Tigers to keep the Pikes Peak Trophy for the seventh straight season.

Burkholder collected the puck deep in the CC zone, took it coast to coast and fired a wrist shot from the slot past Air Force goalie Guy Blessing for the Tigers' fifth straight victory to start the 2024-25 season.

The Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win their second overtime game of the campaign along with the season-opening, 4-3 victory over Northern Michigan.

Air Force's Brendan Gibbons opened the scoring midway through the first period. Clayton Cosentino won a draw to the left of Tiger goalie Kaidan Mbereko and Nick Remissong tipped the puck \to Gibbons, who sent a wrister from the slot past Mbereko at 9:57 of the opening frame.

The Tigers came out and dominated the first half of the second period, earning eight of the first nine shots taken in the frame, but Cosentino gave Air Force a 2-0 lead at the 9:18 mark. Gibbons sent the puck out front and Cosentino flipped it over Mbereko. Rimissong picked up his second assist on the play.

CC cut the lead in half with a power-play goal from Klavs Veinbergs at 13:56 of the middle period. Veinbergs took a pass from Ryan Beck at the right circle and his shot hit Air Force goalie Guy Blessing, but the puck squirted past Blessing and into the net. Drew Montgomery earned his first assist of the season on the goal.

The Tigers outshot Air Force, 18-3, during the middle 20 minutes but mustered just the one tally against Blessing.

Montgomery evened the score one minute into the third period with his second goal of the season. Stanley Cooley attempted a wraparound from behind the net and the puck went right to Montgomery, who was all alone on the doorstep and beat Blessing. Chase McLane earned his first assist as a Tiger in his first game since transferring from Penn State.

Blessing had 30 saves for the Falcons (4-5-0), while Mbereko finished with 25. CC scored on one of its four power-play opportunities and killed off all three penalties.

The two teams will battle on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Cadet Ice Arena, beginning at 7:05 p.m.
