No. 8 Tigers Fall to 10th-Ranked Providence

John Mustard had a goal and two assists and Taige Harding added four assists to lead No. 10 Providence to a 5-1 victory over 8th-ranked Colorado College Saturday night at Schneider Arena.

After a scoreless first period in which the Friars outshot CC, 15-3, Providence's Andrew Centrella, who had a pair of assists on Friday, opened the scoring at the 5:34 mark of the middle frame. Centrella sent a wrist shot from the left point that CC goalie Kaidan Mbereko got a piece of with his blocker, but the puck flipped over him into the net.

Former Tiger Logan Will, who transferred to Providence as a graduate student prior to this season, put the Friars ahead 2-0 at 12:36 of the second period, knocking home a rebound in front after Mbereko stopped a shot from Mustard.

The Tigers (9-4-1), who have lost two consecutive games for the first time this season, cut the lead to one just 1:32 into the third period when Gleb Veremyev scored on the power play. Veremyev, parked at the side of the net to the left of Providence goaltender Philip Svedeback, tipped in a shot from the left point by Max Burkholder for his fifth goal of the season.

The Friars (12-3-2) put the game away with two goals in a span of 1:32 later in the final frame. Graham Ganache took a cross-ice pass from Logan Sawyer and beat Mbereko at the 12:34 mark, then Mustard scored on a wrist shot from the slot at 14:06. Aleksi Kivioja closed out the scoring with an empty-netter with 26.8 seconds remaining in the third period.

Svedeback finished the game with 22 saves as the Friars outshot CC, 29-24. Mbereko stopped 24 shots and the Tigers had the only power-play goal (1-for-2) of the contest, holding Providence scoreless on four opportunities.

The Tigers return to NCHC action next Friday, Dec. 13, with the first game in the Battle for the Gold Pan against 2nd-ranked Denver at Ed Robson Arena, beginning at 7 p.m.
