Burkholder, Mbereko Fuel No. 11/14 CC Past Bulldogs

Max Burkholder scored a pair of power-play goals and Kaidan Mbereko stopped 17 of 18 shots to lead No. 11/14 Colorado College past Minnesota Duluth, 4-1, Saturday night at Ed Robson Arena.

With the victory, which snapped a three-game winless streak, CC improved to 19-10-3 overall and 13-7-2 in the NCHC. The 19 wins are the most in one season since the 2010-11 campaign, when they won 23. The Tigers also solidified their spot in fourth place in the NCHC standings, four points ahead of fifth-place Omaha with one weekend remaining in the regular season.

CC, four points behind Denver and just two shy of third-place St. Cloud State, can finish anywhere from second to fifth place in the league.

Burkholder opened the scoring with his fourth power-play goal of the season. Gleb Veremyev had his wrap-around attempt saved by UMD goalie Matthew Thiessen, but Burkholder was right in front of the net to deposit the rebound just 2:22 into the game.

Matthew Perkins evened the score at the 13:20 mark of the opening period when he took a pass from Darian Gotz and beat Mbereko with a wrister from the high slot.

Stanley Cooley put the Tigers back in front with a highlight-reel goal at 5:06 of the second period. Ray Christy, playing in his 100th career game, sent a pass behind the net to Tommy Middleton, who sent a backhand pass to the front of the net where Cooley collected it and placed a backhander past Thiessen while spinning around and falling down with his back to the net.

Burkholder gave CC an insurance goal with his second power-play tally of the night, a one-timer from the left circle that cleanly beat Thiessen with 3:07 remaining in the third period. Five of his six goals this season have come on the power play and he tied fellow freshman Zaccharya Wisdom for the team lead.

Drew Montgomery closed the scoring with an empty goal 32 seconds after Burkholder's tally.

The Tigers outshot Minnesota Duluth (10-18-5, 6-14-2) by a 26-18 margin and scored multiple power-play goals for just the third time this season. CC was 2-6 with a man advantage on Saturday, while UMD was 0-for-2.

Colorado College wraps up the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against the University of Denver. The game on Friday, March 8, will be at Robson Arena, beginning at 8 p.m., while Saturday's contest at Magness Arena is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
