The Colorado College women's soccer team hosts its third home game in seven days as the UCCS Mountain Lions pay a cross-town visit on Wednesday, Aug 28 at 7 p.m. at Stewart Field. The Tigers are winners of back-to-back shutout games while the Mountain Lions prepare to start their season officially on Sept. 5.
Last Time Out
It was a successful first set of games at Stewart Field to kick off the 2024 season. The Tigers went 2-0 against South Dakota State and Northern Colorado, the first set of consecutive wins for CC since the 2022 season.
Notable Performances:
- No. 7 Kendall Memoly - The sophomore scored her first two career goals in back-to-back games. Her first ended up being the game-winner against the Jackrabbits on Thursday evening. She finished the weekend with four points and four shots on goal.
- No. 1 Regan Wallace - Wallace earned her first two shutout wins and ended the weekend with five saves. The California native shut down both SD State and UNC in one of the more impressive defensive stints in recent program history.
- No. 3 Kylie Smith - Smith scored the game-winning goal against Northern Colorado on Sunday, her first career goal. She put up a season-high two shots against the Bears and started back-to-back games for the second time in her career.
By Committee
Head coach
Keri Sanchez has stated numerous times before and during the beginning of the season thus far that CC may possess a "scoring by committee" type offense. The first four games have proven that to be true. Three different Tigers scored four of the team's goals, three of which were career firsts.
Kendall Memoly leads the team with four points and two goals thanks to her back-to-back scoring performances against SD State and UNC. The sophomore elevated the Tigers over the 2023 Summit League Champions on Thursday with an assist off a free kick from
Alexis Wessler.
Freshman
Finley Schoenbeck scored her first career goal and the first team goal of the season against the then No. 25 Iowa Hawkeyes. Schoenbeck also had an assist from Memoly's second goal against UNC this previous Sunday.
Kylie Smith hadn't scored a goal in her first 30 career games at CC. However, the junior made it look like she finds the back of the net for a living after lacing a beautiful ball into the top left corner of the goal in a highlight-reel-worthy play in the 2-0 win over UNC.
Scouting The Opposition
Despite it being only an exhibition game for UCCS, a DII program that went 15-5-3 in 2023 and won the regular-season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship, the CC will have to work hard.
UCCS is ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches DII Preseason National Polls and is amongst the favorites to repeat as RMAC champions. The Mountain Lions won the South-Central Region championship and qualified for the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals before ultimately losing to the eventual national champions, Point Loma Nazarene University.
