The No. 7 Colorado College men's soccer team ended the weekend with four points after securing a hard-fought 2-1 win over Emory on Saturday at Stewart Field. A
Wyatt Linggi goal in the 64th minute elevated the Tigers over the Eagles in a 2023 NCAA Tournament rematch.
Linggi's goal came off a rocket of a throw-in from
Rex Karjian, who got the assist. Karjian's throw-in bounced past the wall of Eagles to Linggi, who headed in the game-winning goal. The Tigers improved to 5-0-1 with the win.
"It was a different kind of a win for us," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "I'm proud of the guys for digging deep and being gritty. There's a physiological component behind it, too. Being up a goal late in the game and conceding one [on Friday], the guys did a good job at clearing their brains, and we managed it a lot better tonight."
Linggi led the team with two shots, and by the end of the night, five Tigers had recorded a shot.
Both teams struggled to produce much offense in the first half, combining for seven shots by the break. The lone shot on goal for CC came in the 34th minute when sophomore
Dylan Stapley bounced a loose ball back to junior
Luke Stefanski, who drilled a shot off his right foot into the back of the net.
It was Stefenski's third goal of the season, which is second on the team behind
Vincent Luglio. The assist was Stapley's first of the season.
Emory responded after the halftime break, thanks to a goal in the 60th minute. The Eagles got eight shots in the second half but only three on net.
With the match knotted up at 1-1, the Tigers upped the urgency again and regained the lead no more than four minutes later. Karjian stood in front of the home crowd before launching the ball from the sideline to Linggi, who headed in the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute.
It was Linggi's second goal and Karjian's third assist of the season (tied for a team-high).
CC" 's defense did the work the rest of the way. Goalkeeper
Spencer Besselaar got his fourth win of the season after making two saves, his third multi-save game.
Both games this weekend against Ohio Northern and Emory had playoff-like atmospheres, and both teams gave CC all they had, but the Tigers were the only team of the weekend to leave with four points.
"We don't apologize for winning," Palguta said. "Anyway, it comes; we'll take it. We tried to be effective in whatever the game offered and did that tonight."
The Tigers will travel to the East Coast next week as they take on Christopher Newport on Friday, Sept. 20.
