After taking last week off, the Colorado College women's soccer team returns to action to open up Mountain West Conference play against the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University.
The Tigers will play the Cowgirls on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. and the Rams on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 3:30 p.m.
Last Time Out
CC closed out the non-conference play with a 1-1 tie against the unbeaten University at Buffalo. Senior
Brett Tsamasfyros continued her scoring dominance, finding the back of the net in the third minute after a brilliant cross from sophomore
Tyler Rose. Despite not producing much offense after Brett's goal, the defense secured CC's first undefeated start at home through five games since 2014.
The Tigers didn't produce much offense after Brett's goal, but the defense did its job despite giving up a goal in the 67th minute. The tie secured CC's first undefeated start at home through five games since 2014.
The Scope of the Mountain West
The Tigers' four wins in non-conference play are the most since 2019. CC is seventh in the Mountain West standings despite being picked to finish last in the preseason poll. Three of the Tigers' next four opponents are behind them in the standings. CSU is currently in sixth.
Utah State is the only undefeated team left in the conference with a 9-0-2 record; the Aggies are currently No. 10 in the national polls. Boise State and New Mexico round out the top three.
Offensively Efficient
Despite being last in the Mountain West with nine shots per game, the Tigers are third in the conference, averaging 1.33 goals per game. That speaks to the efficiency of CC's offense despite its smaller volume of shots.
The Tigers are second in the conference in shot accuracy, with 53.1 percent of shots being on target. Freshman
Finley Schoenbeck is first on the team among players with at least five shots, with a .800 shot-on-goal percentage. Tsamasfyros is second on the team and seventh in the conference, with a .529 percentage.
Four Tigers have multiple goals on the season: Tsamasfyros leads the team with four, Schoenbeck,
Kendall Memoly, and
Kylie Smith have two, and Schoenbeck and Smith are second on the team with five points and an assist.
Scouting the Opposition
The Cowgirls come into the week with a 2-3-3 record. They concluded last weekend with a 0-0 tie against Weber State on the road in Ogden, Utah, after falling 2-1 to Oregon State on Thursday.
Wyoming is sixth in the Mountain West in goals per game. Graduate senior Alyssa Bedard leads the team with three goals and seven points. Three other players have multiple goals, including Hadley Linder, who leads the Pokes with two assists.
Up Next
The Tigers take their first conference road trip of the season with a bus ride to the desert of Nevada. CC faces UNLV on Thursday, Oct. 3 in Las Vegas. After taking on the Rebels, CC goes northwest to Reno to battle the Wolfpack of Nevada State.
