Luglio's Second Half Goal Elevates Tigers Over Storm

The Colorado College men's soccer team continued to roll to start the season by downing Simpson College 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 8 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Tigers improved to 4-0 with the win and secured another shutout.

It is the first time since 2012 that CC's first four wins have come via a shutout. Goalkeeper Alex Wolter got his first career start and win but didn't have to make a save during all 90 minutes. The Tigers limited the Storm to only four shots, with none on the net.

"A gritty win for the team today against a motivated and organized Simpson team," head coach Scott Palguta said. "Our guys understand that we won't sneak up on anyone this year and every team will give us their best shot, and that was the case today."

The Tigers racked up 22 shots, three of them being on target. CC shot the ball 11 times in the first half, and Curtis Hale led the way with three. The Storm were only able to get of a lone shot in the first.

The match was tied 0-0 at halftime and continued to be a draw well into the second half. The first two shots on goal CC got off was from Curtis Hale and Teddy Libby in the 57th and 60th minute

It wasn't until the 70th minute that senior Vincent Luglio scored his team-high fourth goal of the season after an assist from Jack Hilliard to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.

"It's great to see Vinny Luglio scoring and enjoying himself," Palguta said. "When confident and in form, Vinny is an outstanding finisher.

The combination of Luglio and HIliard has been lethal so far in 2024. The pair leads the team with a combined 15 points. Hilliard has a team-high three assists.

CC was able to hold off the Storm for the remaining 20 minutes and secure their fourth-straight win.

"I was encouraged by the composure and resiliency the team displayed," Palguta said. "In the end we found the goal we needed and were stout defensively again."

The Tigers return home to host two teams they beat in the NCAA Tournament last season. No. 15 Ohio Northern and No. 20 Emory come to Colorado Springs to play a round-robin. CC plays the Polar Bears on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. and the Eagles on Saturday at 7 p.m. MT.
