8th-Ranked TIgers Fall to Augustana

Chase McLane scored his fourth goal of the season and Kaidan Mbereko made 19 saves, but No. 8 Colorado College fell to Augustana University, 5-1, Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.

McLane, a graduate transfer playing in his 100th career game, scored the game's first goal at the 17:46 mark of the first period. Owen Beckner collected the puck following a turnover in the Augustana end and found McLane, who placed a wrist shot from the left circle past Viking goaltender Josh Kotai.

The Vikings (11-7-1) took the lead with a pair of goals in the second period, then put the game away with three more in the third.

Tyler Hennen evened the score at the 5:43 mark when a pass from Owen Baumgartner sailed off the back wall right to Hennen at the left side of the net. He sent a shot that hit the far post, then ricocheted off the back of Mbereko and trickled into the net.

Hayden Hennen put Augustana ahead for good with a power-play goal at the 7:38 mark of the middle frame. His shot from the point changed direction from a deflection off a CC defender in front of the net and found its way past Mbereko. It was the first power-play tally by an opponent in the last six games.

Colton Friesen made it 3-1 at the 6:45 mark of the third when he put home a rebound after Mbereko saved a deflection by Simon Falk.

Mbereko kept the Tigers (10-6-1) within reach with a pair of saves on breakaways in the third, but Augustana scored twice with CC's goalie on the bench, one by Payton Matsui at 18:11 and one by Easton Young at 19:53.

Kotai was solid in the Viking net, making 28 saves, including all 19 he faced in the final two periods.

The teams will battle again on Saturday, Jan. 4, beginning at 4 p.m.
