Tigers Retain City For Champions Cup Trophy After 1-1 Draw With Falcons

The Colorado College women's soccer team retained the City For Champions Cup trophy after battling to a 1-1 draw with Air Force at Weidner Field on Thursday night.

CC (5-6-7, 2-3-5 MW) saw its season come to an end despite a valiant effort against the Falcons, who went into the game ranked second in the conference standings.

Freshman Sophia Mayne scored her second career goal off a corner kick assist from sophomore Charlotte Strabel in the 20th minute to put the Tigers up 1-0. The Falcons responded in the 26th minute when Mountain West leading scorer Annika Jost collected her 10th goal of the season to knot the game up.

CC outshot AFA 21-8, including 12-5 on goal. Junior Kendall Memoly and sophomore Finley Schoenbeck led the team with four shots, followed by junior Nadia Cassamajor and Mayne with three each.

The Tigers went on the prowl right away, grabbing four corner kicks in the first 18 minutes before Strabel lined up on the far side of the pitch and lined a pass into Mayne. The Lakewood, Wash. native elevated above the Air Force defense and headed in the go-ahead goal. It was Strabel's first career assist.

Jost and the Falcons responded five minutes later, equalizing the game after Jost received a nice feed from Kendall Rippley from the midfield.

CC outshot AFA 11-3 in the first half and took six corner kicks to the Falcons' two.

In the second half, Cassamajor had the first shot on goal in the 48th minute that freshman goalkeeper Sydney Nelms saved. Cassamajor got another shot in the 69th minute that was also saved.

The Tigers kept attacking and rifled off three more shots on target from Makenna Kolson, Mayne and Emily Hitt before regulation came to an end.

Junior goalkeeper Regan Wallace made some phenomenal saves, including one in the 78th minute that was nearly the game-winning goal by Eleanor Musgrave. Still, Wallace made the diving stop to keep the match tied.

Wallace finished the game with four saves in her 90 minutes in net.

With the tie, the Tigers finish the season with a 5-6-7 record and move their unbeaten streak to four games, the longest since the shortened 2020 season.
