Four Tigers scored in double-digits on Sunday afternoon as the Colorado College men's basketball team fell 73-69 to the University of Chicago in the All-Academic Classic in St. Louis, MO.
Junior
Christian Drummond led the team with 17 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Senior
Asher Nofziger was two rebounds shy of a double-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and an assist.
Russell MacFarlane added 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
CC shot a consistent 50 percent while holding the Maroons to 39.7 percent from the floor. UChicago shot 33.3 percent (7-21) from long range while the Tigers made 25 percent of their three pointers (5-20).
One of the difference makers was the shots made at the charity stripe. UChicago made 16 free shots off 23 attempts. CC made it to the line for only six attempts and converted on four of them.
CC led at the half behind Nofziger's nine points. MacFarlane added eight points as the Tigers shot 46.88 percent and held Chicago to 38.24 percent from the floor.
In the second half, the two teams exchanged leads for the first few minutes after the break. It was a 45-45 tie with 13:17 left in regulation. A jumper by freshman
Nick Brashear made it 47-45 with 12:28 left, then a
Orion Samikoglu three-pointer made it 50-45 on the next possession. The five point lead was the biggest of the day for the Tigers.
The Maroons rallied and regained the lead with 8:45 remaining. Chicago increased its lead to 69-61 with 1:07 left in regulation. The Tigers tried to rally with a seven-point run consisting of a Drummond three-pointer and consecutive steals and fast break layups by
Terrion Benson and
TJ Satcher to make it 69-68 with 26 seconds remaining.
It then became a free-throw battle in the final seconds. The Maroons made all four of their attempts while CC got to the line once. UChicago held on to the 73-69 victory.
The Tigers are back in action on Dec. 13 against the University of St. Thomas.
