Mbereko Leads No. 19 Tigers Past Arizona State

Kaidan Mbereko saved 35 of 36 shots Saturday night to lead No. 19 Colorado College past Arizona State, 3-1, at Mullett Arena in Tempe to complete a four-point weekend over the Sun Devils.

Tomas Mrsic, Fisher Scott and Gavin Lindberg scored for the Tigers, who improved to 6-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NCHC.

Following a scoreless first period in which each team put 12 shots on goal, Mrsic opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 6:21 mark of the second period. Wilson Bjorck's shot from the right circle was saved by ASU goalie Samuel Urban, but it went right to Mrsic at the left circle and he deposited his second goal of the season into an open net.

Scott made it 2-0 at the 7:34 mark of the middle frame when his shot from the point deflected off an ASU player and snuck past Urban. Bret Link and Owen Beckner each posted an assist on Scott's second career game-winning goal.

The Sun Devils (3-6-1, 1-2-1 NCHC) responded and cut the lead to one with Jack Beck scored his second of the weekend with 25.1 seconds remaining in the period.

Mbereko took over in the third period, making 13 of his season-high 35 saves, keeping the Tigers in front by one until Lindberg scored an empty-net goal with 1:09 remaining in the contest, with an assist going to former Sun Devil Ryan Alexander.

Colorado College's special team's units were outstanding on Saturday, scoring a power-play goal and killing all three of ASU's man advantage situations.

ASU outshot the Tigers, 36-35, including a 13-7 advantage in the third period, but the Tigers held on for their first conference victory of the season.

CC takes on Denver in the first round of the battle for The Gold Pan next weekend. The teams play at Magness Arena on Friday, Nov. 14, and at Robson Arena on Saturday, Nov. 15.
