No. 20 Tigers Fall to 16th-Ranked UND

Carter Wilkie had a goal and an assist to lead No. 16 North Dakota past 20th-ranked Colorado College, 3-1, Saturday night in Grand Forks.

Freshman Carsen Musser, making his fourth career start, made 24 saves for the Tigers, which fell to 14-13-1 overall and 8-9-1 in the NCHC and remained in sixth place. North Dakota, meanwhile, improved to 14-11-2 and 9-6-1 to stay in fourth place.

Musser was tested early on Saturday. Following a slashing call against UND just 2:20 into the contest, he stopped a shorthanded breakaway attempt by Wilkie and saved the other seven Fighting Hawk shots throughout a scoreless first period.

North Dakota struck first at the 5:34 mark of the second period. Mac Swanson, son of former CC great Brian Swanson, collected the puck at the top of the slot in the CC end and sent a pass to Ben Strinden, who beat Musser from the right circle.

Andrew Strathman doubled the home team's lead just 1:08 into the third period when his shot from the left point got past Musser, who seemed to be shielded from the shot.

Grand Forks native Drew Montgomery cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 7:05 mark of the third period. Gavin Lindberg sent a shot from the slot that banked off the back wall and Montgomery was at the right post to flick the puck past UND goaltender T.J. Semptimphelter (24 saves) for his seventh goal of the season and first of his career vs. North Dakota.

Wilkie put the game away with an empty-net goal with 1:23 remaining in the third period.

The Fighting Hawks outshot CC, 27-25. Neither team connected on the power play, CC was 0-for-4, while UND was 0-for-2.

The Tigers return to action next weekend with a home series against Miami University, Feb. 14-15, at Ed Robson Arena.
