Two goals from junior forward
Kendall Memoly elevated the Colorado College women's soccer team over New Mexico State 2-1 in Las Cruces, N.M.
It's the first opening day victory for the Tigers since 2022 and the second under head coach
Keri Sanchez. Memoly recorded her first career multi-goal game and led CC with four shots, three on net, and played all 90 minutes.
"We are excited to open the season with a win on the road against a quality NMSU team," Sanchez said. "They put us under pressure a lot and it was nice to see us deal with it. Also, great for Kendall to start us off with the scoring for all the work she put in during the game."
In the first-ever meeting between the two squads, the Tigers jumped out in the 15th minute behind Memoly's goal and never trailed against a formidable NM State team.
The Tigers outshot the Aggies 10-5, including 7-2 in the opening half.
CC broke open the scoring with Memoly's first goal at the 15th minute after
Tyler Rose found
Nadia Cassamajor setting up outside the box. Cassamajor one-touched the ball to Memoly who lasered the first goal of the season past NM State goalkeeper Valerie Guha.
Six minutes later, Meredith Scott knotted the game up in the 24th minute. However, CC answered back again two minutes later in the 26th minute.
Sophomore
Finley Schoenbeck lined up a corner kick that bounced out, she attempted to put it back in the box, it was deflected again right into the feet of Memoly. The Laguna Hills native laced the ball into the back of the net to put CC up 2-1.
The Tigers led 7-2 in shots in the first half, including 4-1 in shots on goal. Memoly led all four players with four shots in the opening half. Schoenbeck had two.
CC kept the pressure on in the second half, putting up three more shots while NM State matched the amount. The Tigers played cleaner soccer in the second half, committing only three fouls compared to four in the first.
Schoenbeck put the first shot on net of the half in the 72nd minute, which was saved in the bottom right corner of the net.
Goalkeeper
Regan Wallace prevented another tie game in the 77th minute after Andrea Alvarenga took a shot on goal, but the Tiger goalkeeper made the save.
CC was able to ride out the clock for the remainder of the half and sealed the 2-1 victory. Six players made their debut in the black and gold. First-year players
Sophia Mayne and
Lily Smith made their first career start, while transfers
Nadia Cassamajor and
Eden Palkovic were also in the starting 11 after transferring in the offseason.
Junior Taylor Pressly and freshman Taylor Metink played for a combined 77 minutes in reserve.
Wallace finished with one save and one goal allowed. Schoenbeck was second on the team with three shots, including two on net. Rose added two shots, one SOG and an assist.
The Tigers will fly back home to host the University of Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stewart Field for the home opener. The Pioneers defeated the Air Force Academy 2-1 on Thursday evening.
