CC And UTSA Battle to A Scoreless Draw

The Colorado College women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with the University of Texas, San Antonio on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field. CC (2-1-2) recorded its third shutout of the season and had some quality looks on net, with both teams putting five shots on target.

"I'm proud of our defense and keeping the ball out of the back of the net," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "It's tough against a team that is really good at winning balls out of the air. Regan made some really good saves to hold it at zero. So we're proud of the effort today."

CC's defense has been terrific through the first five games. It's the first time since 2008 that the Tigers have surrendered only two goals at this point in the season.

Three players had multiple shots; junior Kendall Memoly, senior Makenna Kolson, and sophomore Finley Schoenbeck all had two shots (one on net). Junior goalkeeper Regan Wallace finished with five saves.

CC had possession of the ball in the attacking zone 30 percent of the time in the first half. The Tigers were outshot 6-5 but had three shots on target compared to the Roadrunners' two.

Memoly and Schoenbeck both had their attempts on net in the first half. Schoenbeck had the first of the game in the 21st minute, which was saved in the bottom left corner. Memoly had hers in the 30th minute, but the UTSA goalkeeper saved it.

CC nearly broke the tie in the 38th minute when Memoly put a brilliant ball towards the net from about 30 yards out that went over the head of the keeper, but hit the top woodwork and bounced out.

The score remained 0-0 at the break, and freshman Sophia Mayne had her first shot on net in the 63rd minute after aiming at the bottom right corner of the net, but it was saved.

Senior Emily Hitt launched a ball into the box from the top left corner of the goalie box two minutes later, but the UTSA defense punched it out.

Both teams continued to pursue opportunities, but the defenses held firm, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Hitt, Memoly, and freshman Lily Smith all played the full 90 minutes. Jessica Anderson also recorded her second consecutive career start.

CC will return to Stewart Field on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to host the last home non-conference game against UC San Diego.
