Hvidston's Two Goals Leads 12th-Ranked Tigers Past #17 UConn

Connor Hvidston scored twice and Jackson Unger made 31 saves to lead 12th-ranked Colorado College to a 4-1 victory over No. 17 UConn Saturday night in Storrs, Ct.,

The Tigers rebounded after falling in overtime Friday night to salvage the weekend split and improved to 3-1, while UConn fell to 2-2.

The Huskies took the lead for the second straight night when Kaden Shahan scored a power-play goal at the 7:54 mark of the first period.

The Tigers responded quickly as Bret Link notched his second goal of the season just 19 seconds later. Max Burkholder fired a shot from the right point that Link deflected in front of the net past UConn goalie Veeti Louhivaara to even the game. Drew Montgomery recorded the secondary assist on the play.

CC took its first lead of the weekend at the 10:45 mark of the opening frame thanks to Zach Olsen's first career goal. Philippe Blais-Savoie' shot from the left point was blocked and went right to Wilson Björck, who found Olsen all alone in the slot and he easily beat Louhivaara.

Hvidston made it 3-1 just 1:53 into the second period. Fisher Scott's shot from the point was blocked by a UConn defender in front of the net and the puck went to Hvidston, who had an open net from the right circle.

The sophomore from Tisdale, Saskatchewan, tallied his career-high second of the game at the 6:49 mark of the third period. Carmelo Crandell forced a turnover at the CC blue line and handed Hvidston a perfect pass during the ensuing 2-on-1 rush for the final tally of the contest.

Unger continues his stelar play on Saturday, making 16 saves in the third period. Louhivaara finished with 26 saves.

The Tigers return home to face Air Force in a home-and-home series next weekend for the Pikes Peak Trophy. The first game of the series is on Friday, Oct 23, at Robson Arena, beginning at 7 p.m.
