Beckner, Crandell and Unger Lead No. 11 Tigers Past Air Force

Owen Beckner and Carmelo Crandell each scored twice and Jackson Unger collected his second career shutout with a career-high 35 saves Saturday to lead No. 11 Colorado College to a 3-0 victory over Air Force at Cadet Ice Arena.

The Tigers, who retained the Pikes Peak Trophy Friday night at Robson Arena, improved to 5-1 this season, while the Falcons fell to 2-4.

Air Force outshot the Tigers, 13-2, in a scoreless first period, but failed to capitalize on a pair of power-play opportunities as Unger made five saves during the penalty kills.

Beckner opened the scoring with his first goal of the season on the power play at the 9:03 mark of the second period. Max Burkholder found Beckner and the junior assistant captain beat Air Force goalie Dominik Wasik with a one-timer from the right circle.

Crandell put the Tigers up 2-0 with his second goal in as many games. After CC forced a turnover at its own blue line, Crandell took a pass from Connor Hvidston at center ice, beat an Air Force defender down the right side then cut towards the net and snuck the puck past Wasik at 13:09 of the middle frame.

CC's Wilson Bjorck was whistled for a five-minute and game misconduct cross-checking penalty with four minutes remaining in the second period, but the Tigers killed it off to maintain their 2-0 lead, then Beckner notched his second of the contest at the 1:40 mark to make it 3-0.

Fisher Scott's shot from the point was blocked in front of the net but went right to Beckner at the right side and he deposited the puck into an open net.

Crandell notched his second of the game at the buzzer with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that beat Wasik top shelf.

The Tigers were 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all three penalties. Wasik finished with 18 saves as the Falcons outshot CC, 35-22.

The Tigers host Minnesota Duluth to open NCHC play for both teams next weekend, Oct. 30-31, at Ed Robson Arena.
