Ty Hanson scored the game's only goal with 2:56 remaining in the third period to lift 7
th-ranked Minnesota Duluth past No. 9 Colorado College, 1-0, Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Â
It was fitting for a game featuring two of the best goaltenders in the country to finish with just one goal. Hanson slid past a couple of CC defenders, put a backhander on net that CC goalie
Jackson Unger saved, but put the rebound off Unger's shoulder into the net.
Â
UMD goalie Carl Axelsson had 20 saves to preserve the shutout, while Unger had 19 as each team put 20 shots on goal.
Â
After a scoreless first period, the Tigers killed off the final 31 seconds of a
Ryan Koering tripping call, the only penalty called in the contest, to open the second period, then put three consecutive shots on Axelsson over the next several minutes to swing the momentum back to the home team. CC outshot the Bulldogs, 7-3, in the middle frame and each team had 12 after 40 minutes.
Â
The story was the same for most of the third period. The Tigers attempted six consecutive shots within a 52-second period with about five minutes remaining, but three were blocked and three were wide.
Â
After Hanson's goal, CC only put one shot on net, but it was saved by Axelsson with 14 seconds remaining.
Â
Koering,
Zach Olsen and
Ty Halaburda led the Tigers (5-2-0, 0-1-0 NCHC) with three shots apiece, while Hanson and Luke Bibby each had three for Minnesota Duluth (6-1-2, 1-0-0).
Â
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Robson Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
