Colorado College Athletics

Colorado College (1-0-0) secured a 3-1 victory over Creighton (0-1-0) on Wednesday at Stewart Field. Freshman Ella Ashouri wasted no time kicking off her collegiate career, scoring twice and adding an assist to power the Tigers offensive effort.

First Half 

- At 1:21, Ashouri scored for Colorado College with the assist from Nadia Cassamajor, taking an early 1-0 lead. 

- Creighton attempted to respond with a corner at 1:39, followed by a shot from Jalen Chaney at 3:03 that went wide. 

- Regan Wallace made a key save in the 37th minute on a shot by Lorel Stringer, preserving the lead. 

- The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Second Half 

- At 54:38, Kate Pulley, assisted by Ashouri, tallied to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. 

- Ashouri extended the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 61:45. 

- Creighton responded with Olivia Duray's goal, assisted by Sarah Hyde, at 79:22 to make it 3-1. 

- Colorado College maintained its lead to secure a 3-1 victory at the end of the period.

Pulley scored the game-winning goal, converting one of her two shots into a decisive point. Wallace made four saves, allowing only one goal in 90 minutes of play. Ashouri added two goals and an assist, leading the team with four shots, three of which were on target. Cassamajor contributed with an assist, helping to set up the team's scoring opportunities.

Coach Keri Sanchez's Thoughts

Thoughts on the performance:

We were just excited, wanting to come out as strong as we did, right? We're hoping that our freshman maybe got a career record there. Her first career goal in 81 seconds must be close to a record if it wasn't a record. So, great to see our freshmen impacting early, but we loved getting two quick goals. Our hope was to try to get at least 3, so, we did a good job there. We got a little disorganized at the end, so there's some things that we can still learn, but just a great start for the season.

Feeling on scoring the first goal of the season so quickly:

It felt great, and it was one of the things that we had talked about because we thought in our first game a lot of our crosses were hitting the other team. We made a big adjustment on making sure that we missed the first defender, and they did a really, really good job. Nadia served a great ball and Ella knocked it in. It was awesome first goal.

Thoughts on the outing defensively:

I thought we did a good job because they were tough, right? They had a really good attack; they were going with 5 forwards basically coming at you on a direct service. I thought our backline did a good job to adjust and win most of those. We had just one bubble at the end, but, again, it gives us something to learn and get better at next time.

Looking ahead, Colorado College will face Drake on Sunday, Aug. 16, at Stewart Field, beginning at noon.
