Biography

HIGHLIGHTS AS A TIGER
2010-11:
An alternate captain, repeat member of the All-WCHA Academic Team and one of only four Colorado College players to skate in every game again his junior season, Guentzel was relied upon in all situations, with 16 (2g,14a) of his career-high 28 points coming on the power play...assisted on the game-winning-goal in season-opening victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a 3-2 triumph over the University of Denver in early February and a 4-3 overtime thriller against the University of Wisconsin in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs...led all CC defensemen with 119 shots and recorded seven multiple-point outings...voted to the all-tournament team at the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit after collecting three assists against the University of Michigan.
2009-10: Tied for fourth among WCHA defensemen with 17 points (2g,15a) in league play while collecting 15 (2g,13a) of his 23 points overall on the power play...assisted on three game-winning goals, including a pair in road victories at Wisconsin and Alaska Anchorage..recorded three assists in a game on three occasions.
2008-09: Recipient of Colorado College’s annual Bob Johnson Award as Freshman of the Year...led all CC rookies in games played (36), assists (14) and points (17)...recorded four multiple-point outings, including a 4-4 tie at North Dakota in which he helped set up three goals...saw extensive ice time on special teams, with all three of his tallies and six assists coming on the power play...ranked among the team leaders with a +6 plus-minus rating for the season.

HIGH SCHOOL/JUNIORS: Guentzel spent the 2007-08 season with Sioux Falls of the United States Hockey League, collecting 28 points (5g,23a) in 63 games for the Stampede...finished with 30 points (6g,24a) in 72 outings with Southern Minnesota of the North American Hockey League in 2006-07, helping the Express win a Central Division playoff title and reach the NAHL’s Robertson Cup finals...a 2006 graduate of Hill-Murray High School, competing in the state tournament and earning honorable-mention all-state recognition his senior year.

PERSONAL NOTES: Born Gabriel John Guentzel, son of Mike and Sally Guentzel of Woodbury, Minnesota...his father, an assistant at CC in 2008-09, currently serves as associate head coach at the University of Minnesota...his older brother, Ryan, played at and graduated from the University of Notre Dame last spring.
