STEWART FIELD

2021 Stewart Field Night Game

Stewart Field, the home of Colorado College’s tradition-rich Division I women’s soccer and Division III men’s soccer programs, underwent a complete renovation prior to the 2019 season, making the state-of-the-art venue one of the finest in collegiate soccer at any level.

On Oct. 4, 2019, the CC women defeated in-state and Mountain West rival Colorado State, 1-0, in the program’s first-ever night game on Stewart Field. It also marked the first time a synthetic surface was utilized on the program’s home pitch since the city of Colorado Springs donated the land for Stewart Field following the Monument Creek flood in May, 1935.

Colorado College hired Sprinturf LLC to install the surface on both Stewart and Washburn Fields, as well as Olson Field, located directly north of Stewart.

Sprinturf has more than 2,000 turf installations in leading sports programs, colleges, universities and professional athletic teams across North America and abroad. Its high-performing, dual-yarn systems are manufactured in the USA at Sprinturf facilities in Alabama and Georgia.

Stewart and Washburn Fields are covered with the Greensport Synthetic Turf System and the Greenplay Infill System (Corkonut), which produces temperatures that are consistently closer to natural grass and significantly lower than an SBR rubber/sand system.

Underneath the turf lays the ShockDrain 580, a shock attenuation and synthetic aggregate technology designed to achieve optimum athlete performance. The pad is unique and used in "new generation" sports fields for field foundations and water conservation.

This enhanced organic turf system is designed to both maximize the environmental compatibility and minimize the synthetic footprint of the new playing field. A fully recyclable turf system that utilizes nature to provide the comfort of meeting all of the most important safety and performance criteria.

The addition of the Musco lighting system provides another home field advantage for the Tigers, as well as a complete game-day experience for players and fans alike.

It is no longer necessary to move the starting times for weekday games earlier in the afternoon as necessary daylight grows shorter, and players have adequate time to prepare both physically and mentally instead of rushing from the classroom to the field for afternoon games.

The new LED sports lighting also reduced the school’s carbon footprint and cut energy consumption by up to 80 percent. The system confines the light to the playing surface to eliminate glare and wasteful light spill into the campus and neighborhood areas.

Stewart Field also is equipped with Spiideo’s automated sports video recording system, which is used by football clubs, leagues and federations all around the world at every level.

Most recently, a scoreboard was added to the west side of the field and windscreens were added at both ends as well as behind the benches across from the spectators.

The Colorado College women’s team also enjoys the use of the SuZone, another 2019 project that focused on improving the program’s on-campus locker room and meeting space in Cossitt Hall.

Included in the project was turning an outdated weight room into a dedicated meeting and video room, along with a stretching area with bands and foam rollers. An ice machine was installed near the locker room, which offers greater convenience to players recovering from or preventing injuries.
