James Wagenschutz enters his sixth season on the Colorado College men’s soccer coaching staff in spring 2012.
His duties include practice planning, team training, game scheduling and budget management. He also coordinates the team’s recruiting, travel logistics, fitness programs and summer camps.
In Wagenschutz’s time, there have been one All-American (Matt Fechter in 2011) 21 all-conference players, 10 all-region selections and three academic All-Americans.
The Tigers have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award each of Wagenschutz’ five years and posted the fifth highest grade-point average in the country (3.54) in 2008.
In his first season at CC, Wagenschutz guided senior goalkeeper Dave Khuen in lowering his goals-against average from 0.89 in 2006 to 0.73 in 2007. Khuen recorded a career high nine shutouts and .815 save percentage as a senior. In 2008, Brian Engle finished 5th and 6th in the country with a 0.886 in save percentage and 0.453 GAA, respectively.
A native of Detroit, Wagenschutz spent four years working with Outward Bound Wilderness before becoming involved with the U.S. Soccer Federation where he managed the equipment operations for all U.S. National Teams at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif.
In 2008, Wagenschutz served as the Director of Coaching- Developmental Programs for Colorado Rush Pikes Peak Soccer Club where he oversaw coaching education, player development, administration and league scheduling. He also has served as a club coach for various youth and senior boy’s teams during the last five years with Colorado Rush Pikes Peak.
Wagenschutz is on the Region IV ODP regional staff and holds his United States Soccer Federation “A” License, an Advanced National Diploma and a National Youth Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Wagenschutz earned his master’s degree in sports medicine, (strength and conditioning concentration) at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, as well as a bachelor’s in exercise and sport science from Colorado State University. Wagenschutz and his wife, Katherine, are the parents of a son, Chase.
