Mitch Black

Black enters his fifth year as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Colorado College in 2025–26, overseeing the middle-distance runners.

The 2025 season was a historic one for the middle-distance group as CC continues to build a presence on the national stage. Rabbit Barnes earned All-American honors by placing fourth in the 1500 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Additionally, the women’s and men’s 800-meter groups climbed as high as fourth and fifth, respectively, in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings. The season also featured three SCAC champions, one SCAC record, five All-Region honorees, and six school records across the middle-distance events.

Between 2022 and 2024, the group compiled six SCAC individual titles, one SCAC record, and 13 All-SCAC performances, contributing to CC’s first-ever SCAC Track & Field title in 2024.

The Tigers have also showcased national-caliber talent in cross country. The 2024 season marked a new pinnacle for the program, highlighted by a sixth-place finish for the women’s team at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. It also included the program’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking—the largest jump to the top spot in history, moving from No. 17 to No. 1 in a single week. The Tigers brought home three All-American honors, along with both individual and team SCAC titles for the fourth consecutive year. Between 2021 and 2024, five CC teams qualified for the Cross Country National Meet.

Prior to his time at Colorado College, Black served as an assistant coach at ADM High School (Adel, Iowa), where he helped lead the boys' team to a runner-up finish at the 2021 state track & field meet.

In 2020, he was an assistant cross country coach at Madrid High School (Madrid, Iowa), where the boys' team captured the state title.

While earning his master’s degree in Health & Wellness Management from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point (awarded in May 2021), Black served as an assistant coach for the Pointers’ cross country and track & field teams from 2018–2020. During that time, the UWSP men placed 10th at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Black graduated from Wartburg College in 2018. He was team captain as a senior and qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, helping the Knights to a 20th-place finish.

Black has continued his own running career, highlighted by winning the 2018 Rocky Mountain Half Marathon and placing 13th at the 2022 Des Moines Marathon. He also holds a USATF Level I Coaching Certification.

He and his wife, Hannah, reside in Colorado Springs.
