It's really no big surprise, after Boston College and the University of Michigan each lost a game last weekend, that Colorado College has emerged as the nation's No. 1-ranked team for the first time since November 2005.
The Tigers, who improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the WCHA by sweeping Michigan Tech (2-0 and 4-2) at the World Arena last Friday and Saturday, collected 504 points and 31 of 34 first-place votes to secure the top spot in the latest poll published on Monday by
USA Today and
USA Hockey Magazine.
In the weekly rankings conducted by
USCHO.com and
CBS College Sports, they climbed to No. 1 by earning 976 points with 39 of a possible 50 first-place votes. CC also is No. 1 in the
INCH.com (Inside College Hockey) power rankings.
The University of Denver is No. 2 in all three.
The Tigers, who play a pair of non-league games at Clarkson University this weekend, meet archrival DU in Denver on Oct. 31 then at the World Arena in a nationally televised rematch (ESPNU) on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Colorado College had been ranked No. 3 in both national polls the previous two weeks, behind No. 1 BC and No. 2 Michigan.
