Tigers settle for fourth at SCAC championships

Colorado College finished fourth at the 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship after dropping a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

Senior outside hitter Anna Clithero had a season-high 26 kills in the semifinal match against No. 12 Trinity, but CC came out on the short end of a 23-25, 15-18, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12 decision.

Sophomore middle blocker Emily Perkins had 18 kills and a match-high 16 digs, while freshman opposite hitter Meredith Ballard had 11 kills and three blocked shots.

The Tigers also were the victim of bad luck because not only did they have little rest before the third-place match, they also had to play No. 13 Southwestern University, which was upset by DePauw University in the other semifinal.

Clithero had a team-high nine kills against the Pirates, but the Tigers weren't able to recover from the heart-breaking loss earlier in the day and were swept for just the third time this season – 25-17, 25-14, 25-11.

Perkins and Ballard added eight and seven kills, respectively.

Colorado College (26-11) will have to wait until Sunday night to find out if it will earn an at-large selection for the 2008 NCAA Division III tournament.
