Freshmen lead Tigers past Whittier College

Freshman opposite hitter Meredith Ballard and freshman outside hitter Sarah Schmoker combined for 18 kills and a .571 hitting percentage to lead Colorado College to a 25-15, 25-9, 25-13 victory over Whittier College on Friday night at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

The Tigers finished the opening day of the 2008 Molten Volleyball Colorado College Classic with a 1-1 record. No. 14 Concordia College won both of its matches on Friday and is the only team to post a 2-0 mark.

Ballard reached double figures for the second time this season with 10 kills and had only one hitting error while posting a season-high .643 attack percentage. Schmoker added eight kills and only one error on 14 swings for a .500 percentage.

Colorado College had a season-best .395 hitting percentage, thanks in part to committing a season-low seven hitting errors. The Tigers had 11 service aces, their fifth game with 11 or more. Sophomore middle blocker Emily Perkins and freshman setter Annie Bernacchi had three apiece to lead CC.

And for the first time this season, the Tigers did not allow an ace. Junior outside hitter Keisha O'Brien had match-highs of 13 kills and 11 digs to lead the Poets.

Colorado College will play host to East Texas Baptist University on Saturday at noon, and then close out the tournament by playing host to Whitman College at 6 p.m.
