Cashing in on its only two shots on goal of the match, Colorado College brought a dramatic and gratifying end to its two-game losing skid on Friday.
The Tigers used a pair of second-half tallies by
Molly Uyenishi and
Sydney Fetter, along with a sparkling performance in goal by freshman
Caitlin Hulyo, to hand host SMU a 2-1 defeat in their Conference USA opener at Westcott Field.
Fetter scored on a rebound with 6:48 left in regulation, snapping a 1-1 tie and helping CC improve to 7-2-1 overall for the season.
Tiffany Brown, whose initial shot was blocked by a Mustangs defender, drew an assist on Fetter's game winner.
Hulyo made seven saves, including four in the second half, to backstop the victory in the first start of her collegiate career. She lost her shutout bid in the 60th minute, when a 25-yard shot from the left side by SMU's Lauren Shepherd found the upper right corner of the net to tie the contest at 1-1.
Uyenishi staked the Tigers a 1-0 lead earlier in the second half, soaring above traffic in front to head
Beth Wright's corner kick past Mustangs keeper Ashley Gunter at 50:22. While SMU finished with a 19-8 advantage in overall shots, Colorado College posted a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
"We had a sluggish first half and were a bit fortunate to escape that at 0-0," said CC head coach
Geoff Bennett. "We came out in the second half with renewed energy, and tried to get the ball on the surface instead of knocking it around. We scored two goals, one (Uyenishi's) on a nice set piece, and were able to get the win. I thought SMU played very, very hard and did a good job of disrupting our rhythm."
The Mustangs dropped to 2-6-1 for the season.
