For Colorado College, a tactical adjustment at halftime made all the different in the world on Sunday.
Led by the goaltending of sophomore
Emma Bailey, along with second-half tallies by sophomore forwards
Tiffany Brown and
Sydney Fetter, the undefeated Tigers improved to 4-0-1 with a 2-0 victory over Ball State University at Stewart Field.
For the opening 45 minutes, however, CC couldn't even muster a single shot on goal.
“They play a high back line,” head coach
Geoff Bennett said of the BSU defense. “We try to play to our front runners' feet, but they (the Cardinals) weren't giving us much. During the break we talked about playing a more diagonal game and creating exposure behind them instead of in front of them, and our game plan worked.”
The adjustment paid off in the 58th minute, when freshman
Kelsey Wise was able to find Fetter open on the right side. Ball State keeper Rachael Murphy made a diving stop on Fetter's low bullet toward the far post, but the rebound rolled directly to Brown, whose easy tap-in snapped a scoreless deadlock at 57:22.
Fetter made it 2-0 less than 12 minutes later after winning a race down the middle for a lead pass from
Lauren Talbot. Fetter and Murphy reached the ball at about the same time, but Fetter ended up with control behind the Cardinals goalie, and was able to find the open net from about 16 yards away.
Bailey, meanwhile, turned in her second shutout in as many starts, finishing with four saves to earn her first career victory. She also was unbeatable through 110 minutes of Friday's scoreless tie with Long Island University.
“Emma's been waiting for her chance,” Bennett said. “She finally got that chance and did very well with it. This was not unexpected.”
The Tigers got 12 shots off in the second half after attempting only four in the first, and ended up with a 16-10 advantage overall.
