Proving that it can be successful on the road as well as at home, Colorado College continued its winning ways on Friday evening thanks to some timely offense from senior forward
Emily Beans and freshman midfielder
Hannah Peterson.
Beans and Peterson struck for a pair of goals within a span of 3:14 early in the second half, lifting the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over UAB at West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala.
With the triumph, their first of the season away from Stewart Field, they improved to 7-3-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Conference USA play. They'll put their three-game winning streak on the line at noon (CT) Sunday, resuming action with another key contest at two-time defending C-USA playoff champion University of Memphis.
“We competed very, very well tonight,” said head coach
Geoff Bennett. “We played at a good level with a very athletic and well coached UAB team, and our kids should be proud of their effort. Now we need to regroup and prepare for a very talented Memphis team on Sunday.”
Beans snapped a scoreless deadlock with an unassisted tally in the 55th minute. It was all the cushion that CC would need to remain tied with UTEP for first place in the league standings, as sophomore keeper
Caitlin Hulyo made seven saves while posting her second consecutive shutout and fourth overall in 2009.
Peterson added some insurance at the 58:06 mark. Junior forward
Tiffany Brown, who entered the contest as C-USA's top point producer, earned her sixth assist of the season on Peterson's first goal as a Tiger.
With the loss, the Blazers dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play despite finishing with a 14-12 edge in shots attempted.
