No matter how hard it tried, Colorado College couldn't get anything to go its way on Sunday,
Ashley Berra scored a goal and set up the game winner by Amanda Olszewski, leading the University of Memphis to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Tigers on an overcast and occasionally rainy afternoon at UM's Mike Rose Stadium.
Olszewski's tally late in the opening half proved to be the difference, as she snapped a scoreless deadlock after taking a nice cross from Berra.
CC had its chances to pull even, including a shot by freshman midfielder
Brennan O'Connell that hit the cross bar 3:31 before intermission, and finished with a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks as well as a 12-8 edge in overall shots. But only four of those attempts reached goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters, who posted her sixth shutout of the season.
Berra struck for her seventh goal of the campaign midway through the second half, converting from five yards out after taking a feed from Brittany Baldwin.
With the triumph, Memphis climbed into a five-way tie for first place in the Conference USA standings with CC, Central Florida, Marshall and Texas-El Paso – all with 3-1 records in league play – thanks to previously undefeated UTEP's 1-0 overtime loss at Alabama-Birmingham.
The Tigers dropped to 7-4-1 overall after losing for just the second time in their last eight outings.
