Tigers keep pace in Conference USA

Beans propels 2-0 victory at Southern Miss

After more than a 30-minute delay due to threatening weather, Emily Beans obviously was ready to play once Friday's match against Southern Miss got under way.

Beans provided all the offense Colorado College would need before the game was six minutes old, scoring for the fifth time this season and igniting a 2-0 victory in Hattiesburg, Miss., that kept the Tigers tied for first place in Conference USA.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hulyo needed to make only three saves in recording her fifth and the team's sixth shutout of the 2009 campaign.

With the triumph, CC improved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1 in league play heading into Sunday's showdown in Orlando, Fla., with UCF, the Central Region's top-ranked team.

Beans, a senior forward, struck just 5:59 into Friday's contest, converting off her own rebound after USM keeper Holly Cox stopped her initial attempt. The tally was the 29th of Beans' career as she climbed into a tie for fourth place on the program's all-time chart. It was her second game winner of the season.

Junior midfielder Meredith Smith added an insurance tally midway through the second half when her bender from 18 yards out sneaked inside the far post.

Cox finished with six stops in the loss as Colorado College out-shot the Golden Eagles by a 16-5 margin. Southern Miss, now 0-5 in C-USA play, dropped to 4-7 overall.
