Overtime tally by Schwartz lifts Tigers

No. 13 a charm for CC in 1-0 road victory

On a dreary Friday the 13th in Mankato, Minn., it was only fitting that Rylan Schwartz would rise to the occasion again for Colorado College.

Schwartz, who wears No. 13 on the back of his jersey, struck for a power-play goal with 51.4 seconds left in overtime, lifting the Tigers to a 1-0 sudden-death victory over Minnesota State University in the opener of their two-game WCHA series at the Verizon Wireless Center.

It was the freshman center's third game winner of the season. He's also assisted on two others.

Rookie goaltender Joe Howe stopped all 31 shots he faced to backstop his first career shutout for CC, which kept pace with North Dakota at the top of the league standings with a glittering 5-1-1 record in conference play.

The teams battled through 64 minutes of scoreless hockey, as Mavericks net minder Austin Lee matched Howe almost save for save.

But, less than 11 seconds after MSU's Nick Canzanello was whistled for a highly disputed holding penalty at 3:58 of the extra session, Schwartz beat Lee high on the stick side with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle after winning a draw inside the offensive zone. Senior defenseman Nate Prosser assisted on the tally as Colorado College improved to 6-2-1 overall.

Lee finished with 27 saves.

Howe made 17 of his in the second period, when Minnesota State out-shot the Tigers by a 17-7 margin. His biggest stop of the night, however, came with eight minutes remaining in regulation when he flashed the catching glove to rob MSU captain Geoff Irwin from point-blank range in the low slot.

The luckless Mavericks dropped to 3-5-1 overall and 1-5-1 in WCHA play.
