Howe does it again

CC sweeps in Mankato with 3-2 victory

Proving that his shutout 24 hours earlier was no fluke, Joe Howe worked his magic again on Saturday and baffled Minnesota State University for the second time in two nights.

The freshman goaltender made 28 saves, backstopping Colorado College to a 3-2 victory over the Mavericks and a sweep of the teams' two-game series at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato, Minn.

The triumph, combined with North Dakota's 3-2 home-ice loss to St. Cloud State, lifted the high-flying Tigers into first place all alone in the WCHA standings. They're 6-1-1 in league play, as well as 7-2-1 overall after extending their season-best winning streak to three games.

Howe's biggest play of the night came at 5:49 of the third period, when he thwarted MSU's Zach Harrison on a penalty shot awarded after Harrison was pulled down from behind by Nate Prosser while cutting in alone from the left side.

Prosser's power-play goal, off a rebound of a blast by Rylan Schwartz earlier in the final frame, wound up as the game winner after giving CC a 3-1 cushion at the time. The senior defenseman assisted on an overtime tally by Schwartz that produced a 1-0 victory in the series opener on Friday.

Another blue-line specialist, junior Ryan Lowery, scored once and set up a second-period power-play goal by Bill Sweatt in this one, as Colorado College recorded its first sweep on the road since late during the 2007-08 season.

The Tigers struck first, grabbing the lead when Lowery took a feed from Mike Testwuide and shelved a wrist shot from the slot for a four-on-four goal at 11:43 of the opening period.

MSU's Mike Louwerse answered during a Mavericks power play a little more than four minutes later, knocking a rebound past Howe to tie the contest.

But, with Louwerse in the penalty box early in the second stanza, Sweatt deflected Stephen Shultz's low slap shot between the pads of Minnesota State goalie Austin Lee after Lowery set Schultz up for a one-timer at the top of the left faceoff circle.

The Mavericks, who got a red lighter from junior defenseman Channing Boe to cut CC's lead in half late in the third period, dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the WCHA. Lee also finished with 28 saves.
