Still undefeated (3-0-3) on the road this season but winless (0-2-2) in its last four outings, Colorado College was left wondering what went wrong on Friday.
The Tigers held on in overtime and settled for a 4-4 tie in the opener of their two-game series at St. Cloud State University.
It was a big point, one that kept them perched alone in second place in the log-jammed upper division of the WCHA standings.
However, unlike a come-from-behind draw in Denver six nights earlier, this one tasted of frustration.
CC, 10-4-3 overall and 7-3-3 in league play, led 3-0 early in the second period and 4-2 a half minute into the third after another big red lighter by senior team captain
Mike Testwuide. The visitors finished with 45 shots on goal, most against a WCHA opponent all season.
And, ahead 4-3 with less than 11 minutes left in regulation, the Tigers not only failed to capitalize on a St. Cloud State major penalty that resulted in a two-man advantage for 90 seconds, but they also allowed SCSU's Brian Volpei to come out of the box and knot the contest on a shorthanded breakaway.
In the end, only a pair of outstanding saves in the five-minute sudden-death session by freshman net minder
Joe Howe prevented the team's third loss in four outings. Howe, who steered away 33 attempts altogether, made a point-blank stop on Aaron Marvin halfway through overtime, then robbed Tony Mosey on another breakaway with 1:55 remaining.
Colorado College's Tyler Johnson scored the only goal of the first period, chipping in a shot from close range during a scramble near the right post at the 10:18 mark.
CC increased its lead to 3-0 in the opening six minutes of the second frame when
Tim Hall and
Bill Sweatt struck just 62 seconds apart. With the Tigers on the power play, Hall beat SCSU goaltender Mike Lee high on the glove side with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the left faceoff circle at 4:57. Sweatt pounced on his own rebound and fired the puck past Lee at 5:59.
But, just four seconds into a power play of their own, the Huskies got on the board a minute after Sweatt's tally when Ben Hanowksi finally solved Howe with a quick wrister from the slot through a moving screen in front. A little less than five minutes later, with CC shorthanded again, Tony Mosey batted Garrett Roe's centering pass out of mid-air and past Howe to bring St. Cloud State to within one. Roe, who also helped set up Hanowski's goal, added one of his own at 4:49 of the third period to complete a three-point performance.
