Tigers come up empty against Wisconsin

Badgers win series opener, 4-0

Colorado College did not find the cure it was looking for at the World Arena on Friday.

Playing at home for the first time in six weeks, the snakebit Tigers suffered a 4-0 defeat to the No. 3-ranked University of Wisconsin that extended their losing streak to four consecutive games and dropped them into a tie for fifth place in the WCHA standings.

It was the first time they've been shut out since falling 1-0 to Michigan Tech in the deciding game of a best-of-three playoff series on March 11, 2007 – a span of exactly 100 games without being whitewashed.

They really didn't play that poorly, finishing with a 35-29 advantage in shots on goal, including a 17-8 edge in the second period.

But, right off the bat, there were signs that this would not be CC's night.

After Wisconsin net minder Scott Gudmandson made a pair of point-blank saves on Mike Testwuide and David Civitarese in the game's opening minute, the visitors turned up ice and took the lead on a goal by Ben Street just 43 seconds in.

Sophomore center Derek Stepan, who also had a pair of assists in the victory, scored off the stick of a Tiger defender during a shorthanded rush at 5:37, and Colorado College never recovered.

Defenseman Brendan Smith and winger Jordy Murray struck 2:02 apart midway through the middle frame for UW, which extended its undefeated streak to seven (5-0-2) games and leap-frogged the Tigers in the WCHA standings. The Badgers, now tied for third place with 20 points, improved to 13-5-3 overall and 9-4-2 in league play.

CC, which is tied with the University of North Dakota for fifth, dropped to 12-8-3 overall and 8-6-3 in conference play heading into Saturday's 7:07 p.m. rematch.
