Alaska Anchorage does it again

Seawolves beat CC, 2-1, to gain series split

Alaska Anchorage, the most penalized team in the WCHA, dictated the tone and got the result it wanted on Saturday.

Repeating a scenario that has characterized their season, the Seawolves bounced back from Friday's lopsided loss to Colorado College with a hard-hitting 2-1 victory that earned them a split of their two-game series at Sullivan Arena.

Referees Pete Friesema and Timm Walsh whistled 36 minors, 18 on each team, in a ragged contest that saw UAA goaltender Jon Olthuis steer away 16 of a season-low 17 shots by the Tigers.

A night after coasting to a 6-1 triumph in the series opener, all CC could muster in this one was a power-play goal by senior winger Addison DeBoer midway through the second period.

Back in late November, at the World Arena, Alaska Anchorage escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory 24 hours after losing by a 5-0 count. The eighth-place Seawolves also have claimed Saturday-night victories over Denver and North Dakota at Sullivan Arena on the heels of Friday defeats earlier this campaign.

The loss was costly for Colorado College, which dropped into a tie for fourth place in the WCHA standings with a 10-7-3 record in league play. CC, which has played two more conference games than all three teams ahead of it, is 14-9-3 overall.

The Tigers, who managed only three shots on goal in the opening period, fell behind with 59.7 seconds left in the frame after leaving UAA's Tommy Grant alone in front of the net. After controlling Kevin Clark's pass from the right boards with his skate, Grant backhanded a shot over freshman net minder Joe Howe to put the Seawolves up 1-0.

The teams then traded power-play goals in the middle stanza, when five players from each were accessed four minutes apiece for roughing after CC's Dan Quilico was checked into the boards at the 5:17 mark. After Colorado College failed to cash in on the subsequent man advantage, its first of four in the period, Alex Gellert's wrister from the slot trickled through Howe at 8:53 to increase the lead to 2-0. The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard at 12:45, as DeBoer chipped a rebound past Olthuis after Rylan Schwartz fired from the right circle.
