CC icers let one slip away

St. Cloud State steals series opener, 5-4

Talk about momentum killers.

When it came to bouncing back at the right time, St. Cloud State had the formula down pat on Friday.

Scoring twice less than half a minute after what seemed to be huge Colorado College goals in the third period, the visiting Huskies stole a 5-4 victory at the World Arena that lifted them into a tie for first place in the WCHA.

It was another costly loss for CC, which dropped to fifth in the standings and into a tie for 16th in the Pairwise rankings while seeing its record on home ice slip to 8-6.

The Tigers, now 14-10-3 overall and 10-8-3 in league play, also watched a stellar performance by senior left wing Bill Sweatt go to waste.

Sweatt, who helped set up a first-period power-play goal by Tyler Johnson, struck for his first of two third-period tallies to give his team a 3-2 lead – its first of the game – just 19 seconds into the frame after hustling to pounce on a rebound of his own wrist shot off the boards behind the SCSU cage. His second red lighter, at 11:14, pulled Colorado College even for the third time at 4-4.

St. Cloud State, however, responded quickly on both occasions. Before the wild final stanza was a minute old, David Eddy tied things up again at the 45-second mark, only 26 seconds after Sweatt's great solo effort. Jared Festler provided the game winner at 11:34, just 20 seconds after CC's last hurrah.

In between, at 7:39, Eddy's second goal of the night put the Huskies ahead, 4-3.

The Tigers had two power plays in the final six minutes, and came close to scoring on both when shots by Johnson rang off the posts on each side of St. Cloud State net minder Dan Dunn.

Sophomore winger Tim Hall also scored for CC, while freshman center Rylan Schwartz collected a pair of assists. Ryan Lasch had a goal and two assists for the Huskies, who improved to 17-7-3 overall and 12-5-2 in the WCHA. Aaron Marvin helped set up three goals, including Festler's.
