In a game about as wild as anyone could imagine, Colorado College didn't quite get the job done on Friday.
The Tigers blew an early two-goal lead for the second time this young season and ultimately found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-4 score in their WCHA opener at Minnesota State University.
CC wasted strong performances by freshman left wingers
Jaden Schwartz, who scored twice to double his 2010-11 output, and
Alexander Krushelnyski, whose first career tally tied the contest early in the third period after he set up sophomore
William Rapuzzi's red lighter just 2:27 into the first.
Sophomore netminder
Joe Howe made 29 saves, including one on a penalty shot by Joe Schiller in the middle frame, when an apparent goal by junior center
Nick Dineen – that would have put the visitors up 3-1 – also was disallowed after officials studied the replay.
Instead, Chase Grant went on to strike twice within a span of 1:42 late in the period and give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead of their own heading into the final 20 minutes.
Rapuzzi and freshman defenseman
Eamonn McDermott teamed up to set up Krushelnyski and pull Colorado College even at 3:21 of the third session. But MSU's Adam Mueller needed only 75 seconds to respond with his team shorthanded at 4:36.
Then, just 59 seconds after Schwartz knotted the score again with 9:24 remaining, Minnesota State's Eriah Hayes beat Howe for the game winner with 8:25 left.
The Tigers, 2-2-1 overall, launched a season-high 43 shots on Mavericks goaltender Phil Cook, who made 18 of his 39 stops in the third period. The victory was the first of the season for MSU, now 1-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.
Sophomore center
Rylan Schwartz assisted on both of his brother's goals.
Senior Andrew Sackrison paced Minnesota State with a goal and two assists in the triumph.
