Ballard leads Tigers to Spike It Up title

Tournament MVP Meredith Ballard put down 15 kills to lead No. 10 Colorado College to a 25-22, 25-12, 25-27, 25-13 victory over Occidental College in the championship match of the 2010 Marriott Colorado Springs Spike It Up Classic on Saturday at Reid Gymnasium.

Senior middle blocker Emily Perkins recorded 14 kills and 15 digs to post her 11th double-double of the season for CC, while senior middle blocker Erika Pirotte added 14 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double. Junior outside hitter Sarah Schmoker reached double-figure kills for the 11th time with 10.

Colorado College stormed out to a 7-1 lead in the first set, but after Occidental fought back to tie the game at 21 on a CC error, Pirotte closed out the set with back-to-back kills.

Ballard took over in the second set, blasting six kills on nine attacks as Colorado College took command early and coasted to the two-set lead.

CC was on the verge of winning the tournament without losing a set after building a 24-21 lead, but three unforced errors and three kills from Stephanie Gann helped Occidental extend the match.

Amy Schornack served five consecutive points to open the fourth set and Oxy never got closer than 8-5. Schmoker had three kills during a 12-3 run and CC cruised home to the tournament title.

Laura Goldsmith had a match-high 24 digs to lead the Colorado College defense. It marked the 11th time this season she has tallied 20 or more digs in a match and her current total of 534 in second on the program's single-season list. Goldsmith needs only 17 more to break Aubrey Reed's single-season record.

Freshman middle blocker Devin Wilkinson had a hand in six blocks, while Ballard was in on five.

CC improved to 26-5 and should maintain its position as the top-ranked team in the West Region. Oxy slipped to 23-4.

Colorado College travels to Colorado Christian University on Thursday night.
