Mesa State powers past Tigers

Sharaya Selsor scored 23 points to lead Mesa State College to an 89-39 victory over Colorado College in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday night at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

The Tigers trailed by only three points when Alyssa Aldaz knocked drained a running jumper in the paint with 12:37 remaining in the first half, but the Mavericks outscored CC 38-13 to take a commanding 52-24 lead after 20 minutes.

Selsor made eight of 12 field goal attempts, including three of five from behind the arc, as the Mavericks shot .507 as a team.

Meanwhile, the Tigers committed 23 turnovers and shot just .280 from the floor.

Aldaz and Jenny Knapp had seven points apiece to pace the Colorado College offense, while Becky Luetjen added five rebounds and three assists.

Luetjen picked up her second foul 9:50 into the game and spent the remainder of the first half on the bench.

Sydney Leichliter had six points and four rebounds for CC in her collegiate debut.

Four other Mavericks finished with double-figure points, including Tara Gehring with 15 and Katrina Selsor with 11.

CC returns to action this weekend when the Tigers play host to Saint Mary's University and Hardin-Simmons University for the 2010 Colorado College Tip-Off Classic.
