Tigers blank SCSU in series opener

Howe perfect in 3-0 victory as Tigers win fourth straight

With a nasty snowstorm raging outside, Colorado College brought its “A” game into another opponent's barn on Friday.

The Tigers roared to their fourth consecutive victory, skating past St. Cloud State University by a score of 3-0 in the opener of their two-game series at the National Hockey Center.

Sophomore goaltender Joe Howe steered away all 26 Huskies shots he faced to record the team's second shutout in a row and his third of the season.

Senior right wing Stephen Schultz posted his second straight multiple-point game, with a goal and an assist, as CC improved to 9-7-1 overall and 6-5 in league play. It's the first time this season that the Tigers have climbed above the .500 mark in the WCHA. They remain tied for sixth place.

The visitors wasted no time seizing control in this one, as freshmen Dakota Eveland and Archie Skalbeck combined to set up senior winger Tyler Johnson's ninth red lighter of the season just 3:07 after the opening faceoff.

Midway through the first period, shortly after successfully killing the game's first penalty, CC struck on a power-play opportunity of its own when junior center Nick Dineen redirected a soft pass from Schultz past Huskies goaltender Mike Lee.

Dineen later blocked five St. Cloud State shots during another Huskies power play in the closing minutes of the second period, shortly after an apparent goal by SCSU's Ben Hanowski was disallowed because of a high stick. Colorado College now has gone six consecutive outings without allowing a power-play goal, and has won six of its last eight decisions.

Schultz struck for his eighth tally of the season at 11:21 of the third frame after taking a beautiful feed from freshman left wing Jaden Schwartz, who entered the contest as the WCHA's scoring leader. Schwartz now has 26 points overall in 2010-11, as well as 18 in league play, but could miss the next five games while trying to join Team Canada for the 2011 Junior World Championship. Sophomore center Rylan Schwartz also picked up an assist on Schultz's goal.

Lee finished with 28 saves for the slumping Huskies, who dropped to 5-10-2 overall and 3-7-1 in the WCHA. The teams meet in a rematch on Saturday.
