This Colorado College rookie certainly is commanding attention early in his career.
Freshman left wing
Jaden Schwartz, who fueled last week's series sweep at Michigan Tech with a pair of goals and five assists in the two games, has been named Offensive Player of the Week in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Schwartz helped set up four tallies in Friday's 7-3 victory over the Huskies at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich., then scored twice – including the game winner – and added a pair of assists in Saturday's 5-0 triumph there.
A first-round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues in the NHL entry draft last June, Schwartz currently leads all WCHA players with 25 points overall (11g,14a) as well as with 17 (8g,9a) in league games.
He'll be in the lineup for CC in this week series opener at St. Cloud State University on Friday before flying to Toronto, Ontario, where he will try out for Team Canada's entry in the 2011 IIHF World Championship. If he earns a spot on the roster, he would miss Colorado College's next five outings before returning to the squad in early January.
The Tigers, 8-7-1 overall and 5-5 in league play, head to St. Cloud riding a season-best three-game winning streak and currently are tied for sixth place in the WCHA standings. They trail fifth-place University of Minnesota by only one point and are just three behind fourth-place University of Nebraska Omaha, which will visit the World Arena for a series on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 18 and 19.
St. Cloud State, which lost twice (3-1 and 6-2) at the University of North Dakota last week, is 5-9-2 overall and 3-6-1 in conference play. The Huskies have won just once (1-5-1) in their last seven games and currently occupy 11th place in the WCHA.
