Kristin Rider scored three goals and assisted on two others, but Colorado College dropped a 12-10 decision to the University of Colorado club team on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Becky Greene scored three times during the final 10:04 to help the Buffaloes pull away after the Tigers knotted the score at 9-9 on Rider's third goal with 12:21 remaining in the game.
The difference in the game proved to be the ability to convert on free-position shots. CU scored on six of eight attempts, while the Tigers were just 2-for-9.
The Buffs also got a standout performance from junior goaltender Kate Mulligan, who stopped 13 of 23 shots while going the distance between the pipes.
Colorado also took advantage of a slow start by the CC attack to build a 4-0 lead on a goal by Alexa Jellison with 10:11 remaining in the first half.
Frances Staadt finally scored Colorado College's first goal with 9:57 to play in the opening 30 minutes. Kara Golmont put CU up 5-1 with 8:41 to go, but the Tigers cut their deficit to one with goals by Rider, Staadt and Jordan McHugh.
The Buffs led 8-5 after Jody Weisenhorn's free-position goal with 22:27 remaining in the game, but CC tied the game with 17:43 to play after Gioia Garden, Marissa McGrann and McHugh each scored during a span of 1:21. McHugh finished with three scores.
Colorado College received five yellow cards and played the final 44:16 without senior defender Maggie Defianti, who was given two cards in just over six minutes early in the first half.
Rider had six draw controls, three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers to lead the Tiger defense. Garden added four ground balls and three draw controls.
Valerie Cranmer made a pair of saves during the final 37:52 for CC.
Colorado College returns to NCAA Division III play on March 17 when the Tigers play host to Skidmore College at 6 p.m. on Washburn Field.
